Background

The Yamuna stretch below ITO Bridge is a critical urban water body used by communities and migratory birds.

Current Situation

After the last monsoon, plastic sheets and thermocol blocks formed a visible mat along 400 metres of bank.

Environmental Impact

Local fishermen report reduced catch; water samples show elevated coliform levels near the waste belt.

Actions Taken

MCD cleanup drives removed 2 tonnes in one week but waste returns within days from upstream drains.

Results

No sustained enforcement on plastic dumping; night-time industrial discharge continues.

Future Recommendations

Install CCTV at drain mouths; schedule weekly community clean-ups; ban single-use plastic vendors on ghats.
